About Symposium

- Objective This symposium is the final stage of Low-carbon Society Beyond 2050 project under APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC CTF), National Science,Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI). The Symposium aims to build on the 2-year longintensive studies and discuss longer-termperspective to enhance the region’s capacity in development and utilizationof resources as well as technologies and innovation that contribute to the successfultransition to the forthcoming Low-Carbon Society. A number ofselected experts, scientists, technologists, foresight specialists as wellas policy and decision makers in the Asia-Pacific region are invited toparticipate in this symposium to share their expertise and cooperate in developing theregional Low-Carbon future. - Relevance to APEC and past developments The 2007 Leaders’ Declaration addressed the challenges of climate change, energy security and clean development and reaffirmed the region’s commitment to work with all members of the international community for an enduring global solution to climate change. They recognised that adapting to climate change impacts is a priority for domestic development strategies which should be supported by the international community, including through appropriate policy exchanges, financing, capacity building and technology transfer. |

However, the charting of new pathways for clean and sustainable development requires common vision of the low carbon society in the future.The purpose ofthe project:Research on the Futures of Low Carbon Society: Climate Change and Strategies for Economies in APEC Beyond 2050 is to conduct a region-wide foresight research on the future society where low carbon economy and lifestyle becomes the principal driver governing trade and development. It included a workshop to formulate future scenarios for the Asia-Pacific region that illustrate social, economical and political demand under such constraints and science and technology developmentsthat respond to such demand. This symposium will conclude the research findings and prepare forkey policy recommendations. - Intended Beneficiaries |
